The Discipleship pathway

A disciple is a follower of a teacher.  Discipleship is learning on the job. We are all followers of Jesus, all apprentice under him, whether we have just come to faith, or we have been followers all our lives.

To be a disciple means to reorganise your life around:

  • Loving God

  • Loving others

  • Making disciples

    We would encourage all people that call New Community Church their home, to step onto the Discipleship Pathway.  It is a dynamic resource that provides some of the tools and trellis to help us learn how to become mature followers of Jesus and to make new disciples.  It is for everyone, not just those new to faith. The Pathway encourages us to KNOW, GROW and GO!

Know

We need to learn what it means to KNOW God and be in a relationship with Him.

We would recommend that everyone does the Alpha Course, weather you are new to faith or if you are a follower of Jesus and have never done it before.

Sign up HERE for our next Alpha Course.

After this there are five Grow Hubs which cover areas of discipleship that are key for our ongoing growth. We would encourage everyone in our community to take part in these Grow Hubs over the course of two or three years. Grow Hubs will be available in these key areas of faith:

* The Bible

* Prayer

* Gifts of the Holy Spirit

* Emotionally Healthy Spirituality

* Sharing Faith

Sign up for our Grow Hubs starts in September and February each year.

Grow

We need to GROW alongside others in a community of believers.

We pursue ACCOUNTABILITY

We see in the gospels, Jesus had three disciples; Peter, James, and John, who he seemed to spend more time with.  We need close friends who we are vulnerable and accountable with.  One way we do this is through Pattern Groups, which are self-organised groups of 2 to 4 people, who meet regularly, are vulnerable and honest with one another and are committed to praying and pursuing lives of holiness together.

We pursue COMMUNITY

Jesus chose 12 disciples to follow him in his years of ministry, to apprentice under him.  They travelled together, ministered together and ate together.  They were a community, who learnt what it meant to follow Jesus together.  The way that we encourage smaller discipling communities at New Community Church is through Hubs.  We would encourage everyone that wants to belong here to join a Hub.

We pursue CELEBRATION

Jesus and his disciples regularly visited the temple together.  It’s an important part of our discipleship for us to join together as a whole church family each Sunday to worship, share stories and learn from the Bible together.

Go

We need to GO and make disciples, sharing and demonstrating the good news of Jesus. Crucial to our discipleship is passing on our faith to others. We encourage this culture by:

1. Alpha – providing regular opportunities to invite friends to explore faith.

2. Hubs – all our Hubs aim to help us grow in sharing our faith.

3. Love the City – we have various opportunities through Community Hub, our Transform Hubs and our projects to show the love of Jesus practically.
